Description

EZ Loader 5-Lug Oil Bath Hub Cap O-Ring – 250-034392

The EZ Loader 5-lug oil bath hub cap O-ring, part number 250-034392, is a replacement sealing component for compatible EZ Loader boat trailer oil-lubricated wheel hub caps. This O-ring helps seal the connection between the oil hub cap and its mating hub surface, reducing the risk of lubricant leakage and outside contamination.

Important fitment distinction: This O-ring is designed for the compatible 5-lug oil bath hub cap and will not fit the 6-lug hub cap. Confirm the hub cap configuration and original seal specifications before ordering.

What Does an Oil Bath Hub Cap O-Ring Do?

Oil-bath trailer hubs use liquid lubricant to lubricate the wheel bearings. The hub cap closes the outer end of the hub assembly, while the O-ring helps seal the interface between the cap and its mating surface.

When properly fitted and installed, this O-ring helps:

  • Retain hub oil: Reduce lubricant leakage at the hub cap sealing joint.
  • Limit moisture intrusion: Help protect the oil-lubricated hub assembly from outside water.
  • Reduce contamination: Limit the entry of dirt, road grime, and other debris.
  • Maintain hub sealing performance: Provide a replaceable sealing component during hub cap service.

The O-ring does not lubricate the bearings by itself. Its function is to help maintain the seal of the oil-bath hub cap assembly.

Why Is the Correct O-Ring Important?

Boat trailer wheel hubs are exposed to road spray, water, vibration, and changing temperatures. A missing, worn, damaged, or incorrectly sized O-ring may allow hub oil to escape or moisture to enter the assembly.

Lubricant loss or contamination can contribute to premature bearing wear, corrosion, overheating, and potentially serious hub damage. Installing the correct replacement O-ring is an important part of maintaining an oil-lubricated boat trailer hub.

When Should the O-Ring Be Replaced?

  • When the existing O-ring is cracked, cut, hardened, flattened, or otherwise damaged.
  • When oil seepage is visible around the hub cap sealing surface.
  • When the original O-ring is stretched, distorted, or no longer fits its intended groove.
  • When the hub cap has been removed and the existing seal is no longer suitable for reuse.
  • During preventative maintenance when inspection reveals seal deterioration.

Installation and Maintenance Recommendations

Before installing a replacement O-ring, inspect the hub cap, sealing groove, and mating surface for damage, corrosion, debris, or residue. A replacement O-ring cannot correct leakage caused by a cracked hub cap or damaged sealing surface.

  • Confirm the hub cap is the correct 5-lug oil-bath design.
  • Carefully remove the existing O-ring without scratching the sealing surfaces.
  • Clean the O-ring groove and mating surfaces according to the hub manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Inspect the replacement O-ring for cuts or damage.
  • Install the O-ring evenly without twisting, pinching, or overstretching it.
  • Follow the hub manufacturer's instructions for seal lubrication, hub cap installation, and tightening.
  • Verify the correct oil level and use the lubricant specified for the hub assembly.
  • Inspect the cap for leakage after installation and during subsequent trailer checks.

Safety Notice: Do not tow with a known oil leak, inadequate lubricant level, or suspected bearing damage. Identify and correct the problem before returning the trailer to service.

5-Lug vs. 6-Lug Oil Bath Hub Caps

EZ Loader has used different oil-bath hub configurations, and the O-rings are not necessarily interchangeable even when the caps appear similar.

Part 250-034392 is specified for the compatible 5-lug oil bath hub cap and does not fit the 6-lug version. For the compatible 6-lug application, see EZ Loader O-ring part number 250-034393.

If you are unsure which O-ring is correct, compare the original hub cap, existing O-ring, and trailer identification information before ordering.
